About Michael Graham

Michael was called to the Bar in 2001. Since his admission, his practice has been predominantly in family law, appearing in trials throughout New South Wales and interstate, as well as in the appellate jurisdiction.

Michael was instrumental in assisting the retired Judge Coakes in establishing the Port Macquarie circuit of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

Before being called to the Bar, Michael had been admitted as a solicitor in 1991 and as a solicitor, he co-founded Ramsland Graham Solicitors. Educated in Newcastle, Michael comes from a well respected family of Novocastrian lawyers, including his late father, Geoffrey, Newcastle’s first Public Defender, and the man who established Sir James Dowling Chambers, as it currently is.

Michael has been a member of Sir James Dowling Chambers for over 20 years and has been a mentor to other members of chambers, taking a number of readers into his fold as their Pupil Master. Michael was elected a President of the Newcastle Bar Association and held that position from 2017 to 2021.

Michael is a member of the Australian Institute of Family Lawyers, Arbitrators and Mediators and holds accreditation as an Arbitrator.

Outside of the law, Michael’s interests include sailing and time with his family.
